When I was designing the "Grandma's Flower Quilt", I had to
learn how the hexagons came together and how they were sewn.
Well, in doing research, I didn't like that the only way to
sew them was by hand. At the time, a few years ago, that was all that was available on the internet. So, I went about
looking at the cut hexagons that I had and layed them out in the design that I wanted.
I noticed that if you layed them out a certain way, you could
actually make rows for any design wanted. Then, I proceeded to sew them on the machine.
That is the method that I will be explaining here. It
can also work for hand sewing as you will see on my new project further down the page.
Also, further down the page is a drawing of hexagons to print
out to use on freezer paper and the back of 81/2 x 11 sheet of fabric.
If you use the printout, make sure you test to see if the
printer ink will run or show through on your selected fabric. It sure cuts down on hand drawing all the hexagons.
Read the instructions below for laying out the hexagons and
then sew some on the machine and let me know if you don't think this is faster.
To start, print out some hexagons, or if you prefer cut them from stencils
in the desired fabric. If you are doing the Grandma's Garden, cut enough to make at least one flower.
The quilt below is the design I will be working with here. You can purchase the kit here in my website.

Now to look at it, it doesn't look any different than hand sew hexagon projects.
But, it is, let us take a closer look.
In the first picture, it shows the layout of the hexagons.
The second picture is a closeup of the layout.
